Flight Training Coordinator

Flight Training Coordinator: Keith Issitt has been our flight training coordinator. He has decided to step down as Coordinator due to personal reasons.  Keith will assist the new Coordinator in the startup on the Administration duties.  This will be an easy transition as all hard tasks of setting up the program has already been done.  Keith brought superb professional skills and leadership to this position. We all appreciate his contribution to the club .
  Sincerely,
  Mark Johnson
  President RRCC

2010 Windbreaker Float Fly

Windbreaker 2010 – Richardson Radio Control Club 7th Annual Float Fly Report.
Allen Delger  CD

Windbreaker 2010, the seventh annual Richardson Radio Control Club Float Fly, lived up to its name again this year.  Held again at Old Culleoka Park on Lake Lavon on June 13th , the event was blessed with plenty of sunshine, gusty 5 to 20 mph winds, lots of choppy waves, and a couple interesting full-scale occurrences.

Thanks to all the volunteers that helped bring this off.  Scott Durham did the food again this year, thanks so much to Scott and Curtis Cullen.  Mark Johnson helped out with registration and raffle ticket sales, and Skip Eads, Phil Cartwright, Stan Soward, Ken Simone, Ron Vandielen, and Will Henson helped with the prep day and during the event.

The weather was great again, sunny with very little cloud cover. It made us glad we warned everyone to bring their own shade.

The final signup showed 16 pilots. This year we had participants from the Richardson RC Club, North Dallas RC Club, the Jasper RC Modelers Club.  There were around 30 planes.  Larry Hebert from the Jasper club was from the furthest away.  Attendance this year was down from the past, and we expect the forecast for gusty winds that weekend was probably the cause.  We are planning to look at some average wind data and trying to find a less windy date for next year.

We had some awesome raffle prizes donated, an Ernst Ultrastand, 4 Master Airscrew props, Discount certificates from Ernst, Fox manufacturing, McCoy Glow Plugs and others, 25 size fiberglass floats from Horizon Hobbies, fuel from BMI Hobbies, and some great Microfastener Hardware. The club also purchased, 1/4 scale floats from Skip Eads, Monocoat and fuel from BMI, 2 digital calipers from Harbor Freight. and a full scale float plane introductory flight from Texas Seaplanes. We also had some great items in the pilot handouts, Zinger Props Certs, McCoy glow plugs certs, and layout triangles from Will Hensons Wood Shop.

The Peoples Choice Award was won by Skip Eads. Skip’s classic antique warbird flying boat was an awesome plane, a wind gust early in the day rendered it unflyable for the day, but the voting was a runaway.  There are a couple of great pictures of it in the photos section.  Skip won a Kolbalt 20 piece tool kit.

Around lunch, were treated to a fly by, landing and take off of a full scale Maule amphibious Float plane by Herb Hagler of Texas Seaplanes.  This is the plane that Curtis will be taking his introductory lesson in. Herb was able to land right out in our landing zone, taxi up to the beach and visit with us for a while before he took off. Here is a link to Herb's web site.  Here is a video of the flyby and takeoff.

Shortly after Herb left, we had four near flyovers by the Liberty Belle B-17 that was flying over the area that weekend.  Here is a link to more information on it.

The Splash of the Day award had 2 solid contenders, Rigo Benitez the reigning Splash of the day winner, got out of shape, dunked his plane, and lost the engine.  Skip Eads lost the front landing gear hardware on his floats, and had to bring his stick in with the floats hanging down in the front.  Skip won the SOTD award, and made history as the only winner to date to put the plane back up in the air. Larry Mowatt again expertly crafted the uncoveted, but beautiful Splash of the Day award.  Thanks to Larry for another masterpiece.

The food service was excellent.  Scott Durham and Curtis Cullen did a great job handling the food again this year.

Financially, we had some excellent raffle prizes and awards, great food, and when it was all said and done, we covered all the expenses, and brought in a little profit for the club.

Thanks again to all those that assisted, and attended. We are interested in any input you have on improving this event.

Thanks again to those that participated, and hopes that you will next year to those that did not.

Several pages of pictures have been posted, here in the gallery, of the planes, both full size and model, seen at this year's event.
Here is a video of the flyby and takeoff and here is a short video of Skip's takeoff.

Helicopter Fun Fly a Big Hit

On Sunday May 23rd we had 24 pilots having a lot of fun with a wide variety of electric, glow and gas helicopters at the inaugural Helicopter Fun Fly. Luke Yarbrough recruited a lot of the local pilots to come out and enjoy the remodeled facility, and I received numerous positive comments about the great facility we have and the event. Scott Stockwell grilled burgers and hotdogs for lunch, Mark Johnson and Allen Delger took care of the desk most of the day and allowed me to shoot many pictures and make sure our guests were enjoying themselves, and President Phil was buy to help us get started and end the day. Luke set up Autoroation, Texas Jambalaya and Bottle Bowling events to keep the pilots and spectators engaged all day. There is a big photo album with 114 pictures for you to enjoy. Thank you to everybody who contributed to making this event a big success!

Old Poop
Hay Mark I looked again today to see if we had a good place west of our road to put in a control line circle and I think maybe
we should just forget it unless 10 or 15 people want do do that much work. Remember where that old matress was, maybe over in that part we might find a spot for a circle.

Old Poop
Hay Andrew I hope you get well fast.

Andrew - Admin
Fred, I haven't forgotten you. I was sick over the weekend and just started on the documentation tonight. I've also dropped you an e-mail with more details. - Drew

We need rain, a nice 2 day soaker would be Great !

Rayburn Brooks
Hey Guys,
The dry weather has opened up cracks and holes again in the grass area along side the runway....land on the grass at your peril as an apparent soft landing has taken out another nose gear.

Patches "MJ"
Yes

Ed Kranz
Will someone be taking the lock off at 7:00 so us late flyers can go up between then and 8:00?

bipeII
There will be another lock on the gate from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Don't need to take any chances of someone flying during the restricted times.

Rayburn Brooks
Latest TFR time that I've seen doesn't start until 3:45pm....we should be good to go Monday morning, but verify before heading out.

Sgt Tom

Is some one going to put another lock on the gate?
