Sig 1/3 Scale Spacewalker Review

Landing Gear and Wheel Pants

9/1/2002 - I assembled the landing gear components to the point that they are ready for installation on the fuselage.  Let me start off by saying that no matter how much I try, I am mediocre at best at soldering.  I clean the surfaces well, use soldering paste, following instructions to the letter, but still end up with an ugly, less than sturdy solder joint.  After much frustration, I believe I have the joints secure enough.  I then coated the joints with J&B Weld and let this dry thoroughly.  I then sanded the joints to as nice a contour as I could get.  I will eventually paint the landing gear assembly black, and most of my mess-ups will be hidden.

The instructions call for placing a light ply fairing between the landing gear struts.  These are to be glued into place and then covered/painted.  Since I am covering the plane with Ultracote, I don't think the end product would look like I want.  So, I built my own fairings, which I plan to lace into place with lanyard material.  I have done this before on a couple of Cubs and liked the results.  Gives sort of a nostalgic look (even though this is not a nostalgic plane....).  See pictures for details for the fairings.

9/1/2002 - The landing gear and fairings.  The big holes are for lightening, the small are for the lacing.  I will cover them fairing first, then lace into place.
