Sig 1/3 Scale Spacewalker Review

Shipping and Packaging

Since I bought the Spacewalker from a local hobby shop (Texas RC Modelers) there was no shipping and handling involved.

The kit comes in a cardboard box that measures approximately 7" high by 13" deep by 49" long.  Upon opening the box everything appeared to be neatly packed.  The bags of hardware and accessories were stored inside the cowl (which was not wrapped in any sort of paper).  The four plan sheets covered the other fiberglass and ABS parts as well as the landing gear components, instruction booklet, and decals.  These components rested on a cardboard divider that separated them from the wood components.  The first thing you will notice is that there is LOTS of wood in this kit!  Wow - a builder's challenge!

Upon inspecting the components two things stood out.  First the fiberglass cowl had two cracks in it.  It looks like it may have been dropped before packing.  The top seam of the cowl was also very poor with a very noticeable offset.  So - this will go back to the hobby shop for return to Sig.  The second thing was that some of the long balsa stock was very warped.  Not my experience with previous Sig kits.  I will see if Texas RC Modelers can get Sig to replace them with hopefully better materials.

As I mentioned - there are LOTS of parts in this kit - 371 according to the instructions.  I may eventually get around to an inventory of all these parts!

The packaged kit.
Another view.
A crack in the cowl.
And another one.
The hardware.  Nicely packaged and looks to be very good quality - which one would expect from a Sig kit.  They even include an AMA wing sticker - nice touch.
The decals.
The ABS components for the dummy engine heads and shrouds.
The landing gear components - vacuum sealed.
The fiberglass wheel pants and wing tips.  These looked very good.
Wood!!!  And LOTS of it.
Some of it was not very straight though - probably about 15 pieces in all.  However, the spruce pieces looked to be pretty straight and true.
